Beginning in Negombo, the tour flows through the iconic Cultural Triangle (Sigiriya, Dambulla, Kandy), up through the misty tea country of Nuwara Eliya and the highland landscapes of Ella, across to the leopard-rich wilderness of Yala National Park and finally down to the turquoise waters of the south coast at Mirissa and Galle – twelve days that encompass the best of Sri Lanka’s variety.

DAY 01
Arrival in Negombo

Touch down at Colombo’s international airport and take the short 30-minute drive north to the laid-back fishing town of Negombo. Your first afternoon is intentionally unhurried – decompress beside the Indian Ocean or float in the hotel pool. The Dutch-colonial canal, colourful fishing boats and fresh-caught seafood make for a gentle introduction to the island.

DAY 02
Pinnawala & Pidurangala at Sunset

Morning stop at Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, home to one of the world’s largest herds of captive elephants. Watch feeding time and the famous river bathing ritual up close. Continue east into the heart of the Cultural Triangle. As the sun dips, climb Pidurangala Rock, a slightly wild scramble rewarded with a jaw-dropping bird’s-eye view of Sigiriya Rock directly across. One of the best sunsets in Asia, and a fraction of the crowds.

DAY 03
Sigiriya Rock Fortress & Village Life

Rise early and climb Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the great wonders of Asia. Built by King Kashyapa in the 5th century AD, this 200-metre volcanic plug is topped by an ancient palace complex. Pause at the famous frescoes of celestial maidens painted on a cliff face, and pass through the colossal lion paw gateway. The views from the summit are staggering. Afternoon is pure village Sri Lanka: a gentle bullock cart ride through paddy fields, a catamaran glide across the reservoir, and a home-cooked lunch with a local family. An optional Ayurvedic head massage to close the day.

DAY 04
Dambulla, Matale Spice Gardens & Kandy

Visit the magnificent Dambulla Cave Temple, renowned for its richly painted cave shrines and serene Buddha statues. Continue to a spice and herbal garden in Matale to learn about traditional remedies. In the evening, enjoy a vibrant Kandyan cultural dance performance. Overnight at The Kandy House.

DAY 05
Peradeniya Botanical Gardens, Kandy Lake and Temple of the Tooth Relic

Start the morning at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Peradeniya. From there, drive the 20 minutes into Kandy for a walk around Kandy Lake. In the early afternoon, visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, one of the most venerated Buddhist sites. End the day at The Kandy House, an intimate boutique retreat, set amid gardens and rice paddies with candlelit dinners and colonial-era charm.

DAY 06
Tea Trains, Misty Hills & Colonial Charm of Nuwara Eliya

Begin the morning with the scenic trail ride from Kandy to Nanu Oya. Make your way to a working tea factory, where you’ll follow the full journey of the leaf – from the plucking fields to the withering trays, the rolling machines and the drying chambers – before a guided tasting of single-estate Ceylon teas. The afternoon belongs to “Little England,” where the British once escaped the tropical heat to build Tudor-style bungalows, a racecourse and manicured rose gardens. Stroll along the shores of Gregory Lake and overnight at Camellia Hills.

DAY 07
Ella: Adventure, Nine Arch Bridge & the Roof of the World

The drive from Nuwara Eliya to Ella is itself a highlight. The morning is yours for adventure: choose from abseiling down jungle rock faces, zip-lining across forested ravines or quad biking along mountain trails or try all three. After lunch, a short walk leads to the Nine Arch Bridge, a masterpiece of British colonial engineering. The afternoon hike up Little Adam’s Peak is accessible to all fitness levels, rewarding you at the top with sweeping 360-degree views. Overnight at 98 Acres Resort or Nine Skies, both perched on the ridge with stunning open views.

DAY 08
Waterfalls, Wild Horizons & Arrival at Yala

The scenic drive south to Yala passes through a patchwork of paddy fields, jungle corridors and small towns. The first major stop is Ravana Falls, one of the widest waterfalls on the island and the drive continues through Kataragama, a sacred pilgrimage town revered by Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alike. As evening falls, listen for the distant rustle in the treeline and sleep to the sounds of the wild. Overnight at Wild Coast Tented Lodge or Uga Chena Huts.

DAY 09
Dawn Safari in Yala & Sunset on the South Coast

The pre-dawn drive into Yala National Park, giving your open-topped jeep first access to the tracks before the midday heat drives the animals to shade. Beyond leopards, the park is home to herds of elephants, sloth bears, water buffalo, sambar deer, mugger crocodiles basking at tank edges, and a stunning cast of birdlife, including painted storks, crested serpent eagles and the Indian roller. The afternoon drive takes you through coconut groves and coastal villages to the languid south coast at Mirissa, where the Indian Ocean arrives in long, turquoise waves. Overnight at Cape Weligama or Lantern Boutique Hotel, both perched above the sea.

DAY 10
Slow Days, Sea Turtles & the Indian Ocean

Today belongs entirely to the coast. Swim in warm, clear water, rent a board and catch a small wave, or simply stretch out under a palm with something cold in hand. The afternoon brings one of the more magical experiences of the trip: a visit to a local turtle conservation project where you can watch nesting sea turtles and their hatchlings up close. The evening is to enjoy the south coast at its most relaxed. Overnight at Cape Weligama or Lantern Boutique Hotel.

DAY 11
Whale Watching, Galle Fort & the Last Sundowner

The morning whale watching cruise (available December through April) is extraordinary. Return to shore and take the short coastal drive to Galle. The old Dutch fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site is a compact warren of ramparts, cobblestone lanes, boutique shops, art galleries and sun-bleached churches that somehow manages to feel both historic and entirely alive. It is a quietly perfect final evening. Overnight at Le Grand Galle, an elegant colonial property inside the fort walls.

DAY 12
A Gentle Farewell & Departure

The final morning is a relaxed coastal drive along the Southern Expressway back toward Colombo. If time and flights allow, the last two experiences offer a fitting close: the Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery, where rescued eggs are incubated and hatchlings released back into the sea. Alternatively, a visit to Gangaramaya Temple, a fascinating Buddhist complex that doubles as a museum of curious treasures, gives one last taste of the island’s cultural depth before you cross into the departure terminal.
