This full-day marine adventure takes you to Mirissa on the south coast for one of the most extraordinary wildlife experiences available anywhere in the world, a blue whale watching expedition in the deep ocean waters off Sri Lanka’s southern tip, where the Indian Ocean swells run warm and deep and the world’s largest animals feed in remarkable numbers. The excursion departs from Mirissa harbour at dawn aboard a specially equipped whale watching vessel with an experienced marine guide, and the crossing to the whale watching grounds in itself offers the thrill of open ocean and the spectacle of spinner dolphins performing aerial acrobatics in the boat’s bow wave. Blue whale sightings are achieved on the vast majority of excursions during the November to April season, and encounters with sperm whales, Bryde’s whales and large pods of bottlenose dolphins are also common.
