This full-day immersion takes you into the heart of Sinharaja – Sri Lanka’s primary tropical rainforest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most biodiverse places on earth, home to endemic species found nowhere else in the world. The drive through the hill foothills passes through tea estates and jungle-fringed rivers, and on arrival at the forest boundary, you are met by a naturalist guide who leads you into the cathedral-like interior of the rainforest along a series of well-established trails. The day’s highlight for many visitors is the encounter with a mixed-species bird feeding flock – the famous “bird wave” in which dozens of endemic species, including the brilliant blue magpie, orange-billed babbler and green-billed coucal, move together through the understorey in a dynamic, swirling, endlessly exciting spectacle.
